Students (especially of medicine in Gdańsk, Łódź, Wrocław) and tech/corporate expats form an international scene in Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Gdańsk. Experience is usually positive; the main friction is bureaucracy (PESEL, registration) and the language barrier outside big cities, not hostility. Kraków stands out for its large student and international community. **Community:** No single hard figure (estimate: low tens of thousands of US citizens, mostly expats and students). US medical students are among the larger groups at Polish medical schools. ## Tips from students & forums 1. Visa-free entry doesn't cover study >90 days — get a type D visa or temporary residence card at the voivodeship office. [euraxess.pl](https://www.euraxess.pl/poland/entry-conditions-information-non-eu-citizens) 2. Pick Kraków/Wrocław over Warsaw for lower costs with a similarly strong international community. [numbeo.com](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_cities.jsp?country1=Poland&city1=Warsaw&country2=Poland&city2=Krakow) 3. Book the direct LOT JFK/EWR→WAW (~8.5h) early — round trips run from ~$400–620. [lot.com](https://www.lot.com/us/en/flights/flights-to-europe/flights-to-poland/flights-to-warsaw/flights-from-new-york-to-warsaw) ## Good to know - LOT operates direct daily Dreamliner flights from New York to Warsaw (~8.5h). - US citizens enjoy Schengen visa-free entry for stays up to 90 days. Visa-refusal figures are Schengen short-stay proxies unless stated; Poland does not publish national (type D) study-visa refusal rates per country. Flight prices and monthly budgets are estimates from aggregators and study.gov.pl and change over time. Entries ranked 31+ are added for search coverage of countries Poland does not publish separate student counts for; their studentsInPoland.count is null by design unless a published figure exists (the Perspektywy/GUS "Studenci zagraniczni w Polsce 2023" report covers some).
