## What it's really like

Norwegians in Poland are mostly medical students (strongly represented at the Medical University of Gdańsk) and expats in tech and the maritime sector — Gdańsk has a growing mid-sized expat community drawn partly by the coastal lifestyle. Reception is positive: Poland–Norway relations are good, and the low cost of studies (especially medicine) versus Norway is the main draw. No visa barriers and cultural proximity make integration easy.

**Community:** Among the largest foreign student groups at the Medical University of Gdańsk; international students are ~16% of GUMed and over half of all foreigners in Gdańsk. Main hub: Gdańsk/Tricity.

## Tips from students & forums

1. As an EEA citizen you need no visa or permit — just register residence at the voivodeship office for stays >3 months.

2. Gdańsk is the natural choice for Norwegians (large Scandinavian community and English-taught medicine at GUMed); yearly living costs ~$4,000–7,000.

3. Fly direct Norwegian/LOT/Wizz Oslo→Warsaw (~2h); Wizz and Norwegian are usually cheapest booked early.

## Good to know

- Norwegians are in the EEA (not the EU) but have full freedom of movement — no visa, only residence registration.
- Medicine in Poland (esp. Gdańsk) is a popular, much cheaper alternative for Norwegians than studying at home.

Last reviewed: 2026-08-13. Visa-refusal figures are Schengen short-stay proxies unless stated; Poland does not publish national (type D) study-visa refusal rates per country. Flight prices and monthly budgets are estimates from aggregators and study.gov.pl and change over time. Entries ranked 31+ are added for search coverage of countries Poland does not publish separate student counts for; their studentsInPoland.count is null by design unless a published figure exists (the Perspektywy/GUS "Studenci zagraniczni w Polsce 2023" report covers some).
