There is a mostly tongue-in-cheek mutual stereotype of rivalry, and Czechs are sometimes surprised Poland isn't as similar as assumed (food, customs). Still, relations are partnerly, with joint cultural initiatives (e.g. the cross-border 'Bez granic' theatre festival in Cieszyn/Český Těšín since 1990). Geographic and partial linguistic proximity means a Czech student rarely feels out of place. **Community:** Small but naturally integrated neighbour community, strongest in the border region (Cieszyn Silesia). No large student clusters; the border encourages back-and-forth mobility. ## Tips from students & forums 1. As an EU citizen you need no visa or permit — just an ID card and residence registration for stays >3 months. [ipc.gov.cz](https://ipc.gov.cz/en/life-in-the-eu/life-in-the-eu-eu-citizens/free-movement-of-persons-in-the-eu/) 2. At 521 km, consider the train/bus over flying — the direct LOT flight is only ~1h15 but airport transfers often eat that advantage. [kayak.com](https://www.kayak.com/flight-routes/Vaclav-Havel-Prague-PRG/Warsaw-Frederic-Chopin-WAW) 3. Use the linguistic closeness but don't assume full mutual intelligibility — spoken Czech↔Polish is only ~36%. [travelwithlanguages.com](https://travelwithlanguages.com/blog/polish-and-czech.html) ## Good to know - Czech and Polish are West Slavic languages with partial mutual intelligibility (~36% spoken, ~46% written). - The oldest Polish-Czech cultural cooperation is the cross-border 'Bez granic' theatre festival (since 1990). Czech citizens do not need a visa to study in Poland — EU freedom of movement applies; you only register residence for stays over 3 months. ### How many Czech students are in Poland? About 1,388 students from Czech Republic were enrolled in Poland (2022/23, GUS/NAWA data). ### How much does it cost to live in Poland as a student? Roughly €630–1,210 a month for a student living alone in a one-bedroom flat, from Lodz (the cheapest of the 8 cities we track) to Warsaw (the most expensive); a university dormitory or shared flat usually brings that down to about €400–700. Estimate from Numbeo market data accessed 9 July 2026 — for a visa, rely on the sum the authorities specify. Visa-refusal figures are Schengen short-stay proxies unless stated; Poland does not publish national (type D) study-visa refusal rates per country. Flight prices and monthly budgets are estimates from aggregators and study.gov.pl and change over time. Entries ranked 31+ are added for search coverage of countries Poland does not publish separate student counts for; their studentsInPoland.count is null by design unless a published figure exists (the Perspektywy/GUS "Studenci zagraniczni w Polsce 2023" report covers some).
